The rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese might have found new fuel. During Team USA's second game at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 qualifying tournament, a single on-court possession reignited debate among fans.
With 4:41 left in the first quarter, Team USA's head coach made a full lineup change against Puerto Rico. That put Clark and Reese on the floor together alongside Rhyne Howard, Dearica Hamby, and Kahleah Copper.
In no time, Chi-town Barbie made her presence felt on the glass, grabbing several rebounds in her first few minutes. After Reese secured her first rebound, Caitlin Clark, playing point guard, apparently called for the ball. But the Chicago Sky superstar chose to bring it up to the court herself.
Less than a minute later, she grabbed another rebound and seemingly repeated the same move while the Indian Fever star called for the ball again.
This time, the possession ended with a turnover after a bad pass. Fans noticed the sudden shift
Fans Dived Into the Comment Section
“Angel Reese bringing the ball up the court when CC was asking for it. She refuses to pass and gets called for a travel. Angel Reese is a b**,” one fan wrote.
Some viewers felt Reese should have handed the ball to Caitlin Clark, who was clearly positioned as the primary playmaker.
“Why is Angel Reese trying to play PG?” another fan posted. “We do not need Angel Reese bringing the ball up. ***?!” one user agreed. However, it's not surprising that fans had big expectations from Clark.
Coming off the bench, she recorded 17 points and 12 assists, which was the second-highest assists in a single game in qualifying tournament history.
Typically, those playmaking duties belong to Team USA veteran Chelsea Gray. But with Caitlin Clark performing so well, many fans expected her to control the offense during those possessions. But with AR’s recent move came a brewing question considering the two WNBA stars’ past rivalry.
“Can't believe you validation seeking n***** keep trying to push that 'Caitgel' nonsense. Her cult will NEVER like or accept Angel Reese, I hope y'all were reminded of that tonight,” wrote an X user.
In the past, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have had several intense on-court moments, including a heated exchange last season that resulted in technical fouls for both players.
Thankfully, their momentary shift in tone in the first quarter didn't affect Team USA. They dominated the game, winning 91-48. However, it could prove costly if this rivalry props its head up again against stronger opponents.
