Angel Reese dropped a bold statement before her first home game in Atlanta, and she wasted zero time backing it up on the floor. Reese's play left many wondering how the rookie pulled off such a move against the current MVP.
The sequence happened early in the 1st quarter. Reese caught the ball right near the top of the key. Wilson stepped up quickly, ready to play her usual aggressive defense.
Then, Reese squared up her shoulders as if she was going to shoot a deep three-pointer. Wilson was fully committed to blocking the shot and jumped high into the air. Reese used a pump fake. Then, she found teammate Madina Okot for an easy layup.
Before the game, Reese spoke with NBC reporter Jordan Cornette and made her mindset clear.
“She’s (A'ja Wilson) a great player, she’s the MVP for a reason, but I know I’m a great player too,”
Reese was heading into her first home game with the Atlanta Dream after a strong 2-0 road start. Her words stood out because she placed herself in the same conversation as Wilson.
While the highlight caught eyes, the rest of the game was a struggle for Reese. She finished the night with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists.
She also shot just 1-for-8 from the field and committed eight total turnovers. The Dream erased a 19-point deficit before finally losing 85-84.
Wilson put together a strong game herself, scoring 20 points and helping the Aces secure a 4-1 record. While Reese is still learning and improving, she is fearless when going up against the sport's biggest stars.
The Growing Matchup Between Reese and Wilson
Wilson is a two-time MVP and the clear face of the league. On the other hand, Reese is a rebounder with a growing offensive game. The matchup highlights the contrast between an established MVP and a rising star finding her rhythm.
The Dream is pushing Angel Reese to do much more on the court.
Head coach Karl Smesko praised her daily work ethic and desire to improve. He noted that she is developing new skills and has the true potential to be in the MVP conversation very soon.
Before this loss, the start of the 2026 season had been impressive for Reese.
She secured her 50th career double-double during her very first game with the Dream. Those strong outings made this latest shooting struggle look like a rare off-night.
The fact that Atlanta almost won the game while she was benched late only added more layers to the post-game discussions.
If Reese had backed down from the challenge, her bold pregame quote would have seemed misplaced. Instead, she went right at Wilson and created the most exciting play of the week.
The Dream will host the Dallas Wings once again on May 23, as Reese will battle the first overall picks from two previous seasons, Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd.
