Though Alexandra Eala began her 2026 season with a semifinal loss to Wang Xinyu at the ASB Classic, her rapid rise continues to turn heads.

Alexandra Eala has struggled this season, failing to go beyond the Round of 16. However, she impressed fans with a three-set win over world No. 52 Dayana Yastremska in the Round of 64 at the Indian Wells Masters, in a match that lasted 2 hours and 43 minutes.

In an interview with Front Office Sports, she later reflected on the support she received after her match, saying, “For them to make the effort to stay up late and stay in the cold and cheer me on, it really added to the feelings and the emotions.”

Her emotional reaction is understandable, as the 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win marked her second straight victory over Dayana Yastremska, following her impressive quarterfinal win at the Lexus Eastbourne Open last year.

Eala herself admitted, “I did not expect this sort of fanbase or crowd rallying behind me," to FOS, before adding, "But it’s an incredible privilege to have, I tell you.”

What’s more, according to Filipino sports journalist TJ Manotoc, fans are rallying behind the young star because the country has been searching for a new global icon since Manny Pacquiao retired from Boxing.

“The country has been hungry for the next Manny Pacquiao,” he said, adding that during Pacquiao’s peak, everything would stop as people tuned in to watch him.

So now, as expectations begin to rise, Madrid presents the perfect stage for her to make a statement on clay.

Can Alexandra Eala Turn Madrid Into Her Clay-Court Statement?

Alexandra Eala is 1–2 on clay this year, beating Julia Grabher in the first round of the Linz Open before falling to Jelena Ostapenko and Leylah Fernandez in Stuttgart.

Now, as she heads to Spain for the Madrid Open from April 21 to May 3, 2026, the 20-year-old gets another chance to prove herself on clay, having already played 6 matches there through wild cards from IMG.

While she has won only 2 of her six matches, Alexandra Eala has still shown strong performances, and with primary coach Joan Bosch at the Rafael Nadal Academy, she continues to improve and push beyond her current ranking of 45.

Interestingly, Alexandra Eala took a set off Iga Swiatek, a four-time French Open champion, last year. Although she lost in three sets, she proved she can compete at the top level, and now, a year older and improved, it remains to be seen what she can do at the 2026 Madrid Open.

So, do you think she can become the Philippines’ next global sports icon after Manny Pacquiao?
