Alabama A&M Celebrates Coach’s Milestone in a Surprising Manner

Jan 25, 2026, 11:54 PM CUT

The AAMU Bulldogs coach, Dawn Thornton, entered the locker room to pin-drop silence, even after achieving a significant milestone, but the silence was being observed to set the stage for the surprise.

Thornton stormed into the locker room in a celebratory mood, but was startled to see her girls in dismay. However, the squad soon blasted into a loud hype roll to celebrate the 125th win of their coach's career.

The locker room erupted with an array of voices singing the Bulldogs' war cry, with coach Thornton leading the pack. The entire squad went, "It's in my blood. I cannot lie. I'll be a bad, bad, bulldog. Till the day I d**."

This Saturday, Thornton and the Bulldogs hit a 6-0 winning streak after defeating Texas Southern 81-63, which was the 125th victory of her coaching career.

Thornton joined A&M in 2024 after serving five seasons as the head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The team ended the 2023-24 season in fourth place in the SWAC, and that’s where she claimed her 100th victory.

Nevertheless, her stats as a coach kept improving during her A&M tenure, as the Bulldogs had their first 20-win season in NCAA Division I history in 2024-25. They finished with a 21–11 overall record and a 14–4 mark in SWAC play.

But while coach Thornton has already pushed the Bulldogs to first place in the SWAC, even better things might be on the way.

Dawn Thornton Has Signed a 3-Year Extension With Alabama A&M

The Bulldogs' current standing suggests Thornton's girls have a good chance of finishing the season at the top. However, AAMU authorities can expect good results even in the upcoming seasons since Thornton isn't going anywhere.

In November 2025, the Bulldogs HC was awarded a three-year extension, which prompted her to express her gratitude.

She said, "I'm truly honoured to continue my journey at Alabama A&M University.  This extension is bigger than basketball. It's about impact, legacy, and purpose."

AAMU's decision to retain Thornton is paying its dividends in the team's success. The team now ranks 1st in SWAC.

The Bulldogs are set to play against Bethune-Cookman next, on January 30. Do you think Thornton will secure her 126th win that day?
