A’ja Wilson Signs Record-Breaking Contract With LV Aces

The Las Vegas Aces have cemented their next three seasons for success after the renewal of four-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson.

Wilson signed a three-year contract with the Aces worth $5 million, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Till now, it is the richest and most unique deal the WNBA has ever seen following the new CBA.

Every other multi-year deal has featured fixed numbers, except in A'ja's case. Her salary will increase over the next two years based on her receiving 20% of the team's salary cap, per ESPN's Alexa Philippou.

The deal comes as no surprise, as Wilson already revealed her loyalty to the Aces during free agency. “I know exactly where I am. I know I love Vegas. I’m not leaving Vegas, so I’m not looking anywhere,” Wilson said.

At 29, Wilson is probably at her best right now. In the same season, she won the championship, the Finals MVP, the league MVP, and the DPOY. She was the first player in WNBA history to do all of these things.

Wilson averaged 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while shooting 50.5% from the field. It was considered one of the best individual seasons in league history as Wilson was all over the court, be it scoring, playmaking, or anchoring the defence.

Apart from signing a historic deal with Wilson, the Aces have been busy during free agency. They brought Jackie Young and Jewell Loyd back to the team and signed Chennedy Carter to a training camp contract as a possible offensive option for next season.

Wilson will have the most money in a WNBA contract ever, but there are still reasons to think that the future Hall of Famer is underpaid.

Is the WNBA Record Contract Worthy of A'ja Wilson's Greatness?

Wilson currently sits atop the richest WNBA contracts after the latest CBA, being one of only two players to have received supermax contracts. The other is the Indiana Fever's Kelsey Mitchell with $1.4 million.

However, since the supermax is set to a limit, meaning even the best player in the world can only earn so much. The system has limited what Wilson can actually earn, not her own worth.

Additionally, Wilson is one of the faces of the WNBA, apart from being the best player in the league. She’s part of why the league is gaining momentum, attention, and relevance. This is something a simple contract can't fully capture.

Comparing Wilson's contract to the richest NBA deals highlights a massive disparity. Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum holds the largest total contract in NBA history, a five-year deal worth over $313 million.

In terms of single-season salary, Stephen Curry is the highest-paid player, set to earn $59.6 million, with his career earnings expected to exceed $500 million.

A'ja Wilson's groundbreaking contract is a big deal for the WNBA because it shows that women's basketball is getting more attention and recognition for its high quality.
