A’ja Wilson Details Media Day Look Inspired by Jean Grey Character

You know it's time for the WNBA Media Day when A'ja Wilson debuts a new hair colour.

Last year, it was pink, and the year before that, it was platinum silver that coincided with the Las Vegas Aces' uniform rebrand. This time, Wilson chose an auburn red colour, taking inspiration from a Marvel superhero.

“There’s just something about just changing my hair a little bit for media day. I think it brings me a little bit of joy that the season’s beginning. This one, we kind of went with the Jean Grey type of vibe with X-Men. She is a superhero that is pretty, pretty powerful. And I kind of went with this just to kind of give you those vibes.” Wilson said, per the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Dominic Lavoie.

Wilson credited her "glam squad" who help her look "good" and "extra" every year she walks into media day.

The four-time MVP, taking inspiration from Jean Grey of all superhero characters, might be a subtle hint at what is to come next season.

ESPN's Myron Medcalf was one of the few to catch on to that feeling, immediately posting to his X account and drawing an interesting correlation that could put the league on notice.

“Just so we're clear here: In the comic books, Jean Grey wiped out entire galaxies and dominated the whole universe. So, good luck, everybody.” He wrote.

Well, Wilson is quite literally the best candidate for such a correlation, being the most dominant player in the league over the past few years.

Last season, Wilson averaged 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. She led the Aces to a WNBA Finals victory, winning Finals MVP, and was also named WNBA MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.

The 29-year-old is the definition of a complete player, and her adaptation to Jean Grey perfectly suits her own stature.

The hair colour change is also an indicator of Wilson's intentions this coming season, and just like Jean Grey's hunger for power, the 29-year-old is hungry for chip no.4 with the Aces.

A'ja Wilson Aims for Yet Another Championship with the Aces

During media day, Wilson also mentioned the need for games to have a "dogfight" element to them, so that the league attracts more viewership.

And going into the season looking for their fourth championship, Wilson said the league’s growth doesn’t make it more difficult for the team. Moreover, the reigning champion believes the Aces have a target on their back, which further motivates her heading into the new season.

“No matter what the outside noise may be, no matter what the league may look like, we have to continue to be the Aces in the standard that we’ve set,” she said. “So yeah, really, I can’t concentrate on what everyone else got going on. I can only pay attention to what we have in our locker room, and I think we have something pretty special.”

The Aces have renewed their "Big 3's" contract on multi-million dollar deals, and added an elite scorer in Chennedy Carter as a valuable rotational player. The road to their fourth championship starts on May 9 against the Phoenix Mercury.

So, do you think Wilson will be able to lead the Aces to their second consecutive title this year?
