The South Carolina Gamecocks saw multiple players step up in their first-round win over the Southern Jaguars. But none stood out quite like Agot Makeer! The South Carolina freshman earned a new nickname after a standout performance against the Southern Jaguars.
Teammate Raven Johnson called her the 'silent killer' for a reason. “She’s a silent killer… it’s people like her that get you to Final Fours or win national championships,” said Raven Johnson.
It all came as the Gamecocks entered the court against the Jaguars. In just 26 minutes, Makeer recorded three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. But that’s not it; she even added 15 points, becoming one of five South Carolina players to finish in double figures.
Her performance impressed not only fans but also earned high praise from her teammates.
The nickname "serial killer" seems fitting. That’s because the Gamecocks’ bench was shorthanded, with Maddy McDaniel unavailable. But then, Makeer stepped in and delivered. She shot an efficient 7-of-11 from the field and provided the energy the team needed.
“I think it’s just playing like me,” Makeer said in the postgame interview. “We’ve been saying all week that I need to step up. People off the bench need to step up. Without Maddy, we needed energy, and I felt like I had to bring it tonight.”
“I was just excited,” she added. “The last time we were on the court, we lost. So this felt like redemption—to come back and have a good game.” Makeer's layup during the 13-0 opening run set the tone for the game, signaling a strong comeback. But...
Is This a Huge Loss for UConn?
Last year, the Huskies did not sign a McDonald's All-American for the second time since 2002. And that was majorly due to Makeer, the No. 4 recruit who committed to SC.
She chose Gamecocks over UConn and Michigan State despite being the Huskies' last major target in the class after having secured three signees already.
And now, the freshman star is clearly impacting games on both ends of the floor. So... it's not hard to see that losing her is a significant miss for UConn!
