Agot Makeer Navigates New Role With Ta'Niya Latson Back in Action

South Carolina Gamecocks freshman Agot Makeer is learning quickly that adaptability is as important as the technical skills needed to play basketball.
With Gamecocks' core player Ta'Niya Latson back from injury, Makeer shifts back to an off-bench role.
But there's no shift in her motivation. “I feel like I was adjusted before I started. It's like the same thing. You have to bring the same energy,” she said via ABC Columbia when asked about the adjustment.
“Coach [Dawn Staley] talked to me this morning, and she said I still need the same energy. So that's what I brought, and that's what I'll continue to bring.”
She clearly meant it, posting 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 assist in 28 minutes played at Colonial Life Arena against the Georgia Bulldogs. The Gamecocks are now 17-1 and stand 3rd nationally.
Her statement reflects her willingness to play in any role just to contribute to the team. After she had a rough start to the season, she missed a month of play in concussion protocol. Returning only in late December against Providence, she made her first career double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"Then, being out for the last five games, I saw a different perspective from the sideline. Once I got up there, I just knew it would come eventually.” She also made 4 of 9 from the arc with a 66.7 2P%.
“I thought it was good,” Staley said after the performance. “I thought she was a little rusty in the first half, but I think, with extended minutes, I thought she looked good.”
The time away proved to be a turning point for Makeer

When Seminoles transfer Ta'Niya Latson went down with a left ankle sprain, Makeer was the best option for the Gamecocks. The Thunder Bay native is averaging 6.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in 13 games, while shooting nearly 43 percent from the field.
As the senior guard returns to play in the SEC, Makeer's minutes may dip, but her goal will remain the same: bring the energy and be ready to show up in big moments.
